Nitish woos Nari Shakti: 35% of all government jobs in Bihar to be reserved for women

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar also announced the formation of the Bihar Youth Commission. He said the commission would coordinate with government departments to ensure better education and employment for the state's youth.

In a major nari shakti (women empowerment) push ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on July 8 announced that 35 per cent of all posts in every category of the state’s government jobs will be reserved exclusively for women who are permanent residents of Bihar.

The state cabinet has approved the proposal. The decision comes months ahead of the state Assembly elections. The approval was part of a broader package of schemes, including the establishment of the Bihar Youth Commission, aimed at enhancing youth employment and empowerment.

Bihar Chief Secretary S Siddharth told ANI, “…women native to the state will be allowed 35 per cent horizontal reservation on all posts in direct appointment in all government service cadres of Bihar state.”

The state already provides 50 per cent reservation for women in Panchayati Raj institutions.

Bihar Youth Commission

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar also announced the formation of the Bihar Youth Commission. He said the commission would coordinate with government departments to ensure better education and employment for the state’s youth.

The Bihar Youth Commission will advise the government on all matters related to the upliftment and welfare of the youth in the state. It will coordinate with government departments to ensure better education and employment opportunities for young people.

The Commission will have a chairperson, two vice-chairpersons and seven members, all below the age of 45. It will also monitor that local youths get priority in private sector jobs within the state, while safeguarding the interests of students and workers from Bihar who are studying or employed outside the state.

“The commission will be tasked with preparing programmes to curb social evils like alcohol and substance abuse and will make recommendations to the government in such matters,” Nitish Kumar said.

The state government said this initiative aims to make Bihar’s youth self-reliant, skilled, and employment-ready, ensuring a secure future for the coming generations.
