SIS founder R K Sinha: Inspiring journey from a trainee journalist to a global leader in security services

Ravindra Kishore Sinha, popularly known as RK Sinha, is the founder of Security & Intelligence Services (SIS), one of the leading security services firm employing nearly 3 lakh people globally.

Sinha started SIS in 1974 with a team of two people from a small rented office in Patna. Today SIS is among the top 10 largest private sector employers in the country. The company’s turnover is over Rs 13,000 crore.

He was born on September 22, 1951, in Buxar district of Bihar. He, however, shifted to Patna, where he completed his education and started his career as a journalist.

Trainee Journalist

Sinha began his career as a trainee journalist. He worked for local newspapers like The Searchlight and Pradeep, covering important events like the 1971 Bangladesh war. This experience shaped his future entrepreneurial journey.

During his reporting on the 1971 war, Sinha was inspired by the discipline and dedication of the army personnel. This interaction laid the foundation for his business idea, which aimed to provide employment opportunities for ex-servicemen.

Sinha is widely recognised and known as a pioneer and industry leader in securities management. He represents the private security industry before government bodies for legislation and regulatory matters regularly. Sinha has also served as an Advisor to the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India (1999 – 2004).

He has authored a book titled “Jan Andolan”. The book is widely identified as the first authentic research book on the student movement in India led by revolutionary leader Jai Prakash Narayan between 1970 – 1975. R K is also a renowned expert and well known speaker on subjects like security, loss prevention, training and disaster management. He is a regular faculty at universities across India and US apart from delivering papers at various industry forums across the world. In recognition of his contribution to the industry, the Security Association of Singapore (SAS) honoured him with a Loss Prevention Promoter Award (2006).

RK Sinha’s Political Journey

Singh is one of the founding members of BJP. He was inducted in Jan Sangh by Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya himself during 1966. He was elected to Rajya Sabha in 2014 and served as member of the Upper House of Parliament till 2020.

He has also held several organisational positions with the BJP both at state unit and central organisation levels. Most recently, he was involved as the Chairman of the Bihar Election Campaign Committee which delivered a landmark result both in the Vidhan Sabha & Lok Sabha elections in Bihar.
